The Alicization arc didn’t bring that dynamic back to the way it was, but it did recreate it with an added focus on Underworld’s unique AI, allowing viewers to reflect on the weight that their lives carry. Kawahara’s decision to move away from survival mode came at the cost of the tension and finality that made the original idea so exciting.

Although they expanded on the lore of the series and built on new worlds and character dynamics, the conflicts that drove them were very different from what the series began. The Fairy Dance and Phantom Bullet arcs felt relatively tame compared to their predecessor. By the time the final battle for the arc begins, there’s been enough show, world building, and character development to get viewers to really invest in its outcome. It reflects the care that goes into crafting Aincrad as a living world inhabited by real people, rather than just serving as an RPG. The underworld feels more alive than the world of ALfheim and GGO, with the arc introducing many different characters and giving insight into the history and cultures of the world that made it easy to engage with.
Unlike post-Aincrad arcs, permanent character death was a real possibility once again, and with it came strong emotional bonds. The attachment to characters like Eugeo, Alice, and Bercouli, among others, is what makes the conflicts that make up the Alicization arc so appealing. This human-like connection is what drives Kirito to help the inhabitants of the Underworld, and the humanity of those who live in it is reflected in their personalities, ambitions, and the impact of their deaths. Rather than just programming in the game, the inhabitants of the underworld evolved and advanced over time, developing their own history and cultures. The Soul Translator connects to the spirit of its user, and takes them into a world filled with advanced artificial intelligence made from the remnants of human consciousness called Fluctlights.
Making Kirito so weak went a long way in getting fans to invest in the arc, as did the introduction of the Soul Translator, which brought back the high stakes of life or death that the second and third arcs were lacking. The Alicization arc pushed the zombie Kirito into another virtual world, putting him in a similar state to what he had been in throughout the SAO Incident.
